What is “Grid Theory” and why is it important to web design?
Grid Theory is a concept of dividing the elements of a composition. Grids are an essential tool for Graphic Design as it helps with proportions.
The Grid Theory gives a logical guideline for producing appealing layouts. Pythagoras’ Golden Ratio is often used. Compositions divided by lines that are proportionate to the golden ratio are considered to be aesthetically pleasing.
In addition to “balance,” what are the other design principles important also to Web design?
Unity: The entire web page must work as a whole unit using two approaches: proximity and repetition.
Emphasis: Making a particular element of the web page stand out by using methods of placement, continuance, isolation, contrast, and proportion to achieve a focal point.
What are the “Bread and Butter Layouts” in web design?
Left Column Navigation: the standard web design; safe choice. The layout is divided under the header with a narrow left column and wide right column.
-downside: they can lack creativity.
Right Column Navigation: similar to left column but opposite. Usability and practicality to right columns since mouse hovers to the right anyways.
Three Column Navigation: has a wide center column with a left and right navigational column. Good for pages with lots of navigation, content, advertising.
